- Neurobiological processes that occur during sleep have a huge impact on brain health (when you sleep, changes in the brain occur that affect new learning, memories, attention, problem solving and creativity.)
- The space surrounding brain cells (interstitial space) may increase when we sleep, which allows the brain to flush out toxins that build up when we’re awake.
- Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common form of dementing illness, and almost half of older adults report insomnia. Most sleep disturbance is treatable, so interventions to improve or maintain health sleep may help prevent or slow AD - or at least keep people as sharp as possible given their limitations!
- Stick to a schedule
- Turn off electronics (no blue light!)
- Create a calm sleeping atmosphere (dark, cool and quiet.)
